Also in October, the Festival do Recife is held. This is a local government initiative that since its inception has seen great changes taking place. In the beginning local groups and companies showing popular cultural events gathered in the city with its strong and rich popular cultural roots. During the last years the tone of the festival has changed to include national and international contemporary dance. This has led to discussions on tradition and modernity. The festival is evaluated by the public every year at a meeting that takes place on the last day of the festival.

The design faculty of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) was established in 1972 with the creation of an Industrial Design course and its qualification program in visual programming and product design. Today it offers a full graduate (bachelor) programme in Design, the Masters programme for Design and lato sensu courses in Ergonomics, Information and Fashion Design.
